Do your eyelids sag or look droopy? These frustrating yet apparent signs of aging can make you look older than you are.

Your eyelids are covered by thin, delicate skin that often shows signs of aging long before wrinkles and lines appear on the rest of your face. Fortunately, eyelid surgery can reverse the signs of aging and allow your eyes to reflect your youthful, vibrant spirit.

Keep reading to discover how to go from tired to timeless by refreshing your appearance with upper eyelid surgery!

What Happens When Your Eyes Start to Look Older?

As you grow older, your body produces less elastin and collagen. Collagen and elastin are essential proteins that keep your skin firm and resilient.

The gradual loss of firmness and elasticity can cause the thin, delicate skin on your eyelids to look thinner and more fragile. The levator muscles that lift your eyelids may weaken over time.

The loss of elasticity, firmness, and muscle strength combined with the effects of gravity can lead to excessive skin in both the upper eyelids. As a result, the upper eyelids may look as if they’re partly closed.

In severe cases, the extra skin folds on the upper eyelids can droop and obstruct vision. These changes can make you look older than you are, worn out, disinterested, and even angry.

You may have tried eyelid creams or other temporary solutions, but unfortunately, they cannot provide long-term results.ults.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that can reshape your eyelids and remove years from your appearance, giving you a more vibrant and rejuvenated look.
Dr. Lisa Chipps, current Vice President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, shares her clinical perspective:

“Eyelid surgery can significantly rejuvenate a patient’s appearance by addressing age-related changes in the eye area. We often see patients transition from a consistently fatigued look to a more alert and refreshed appearance that better reflects their actual energy levels.”

Lisa Chipps, MD, MS

Eyelid surgery involves trimming excess skin, removing muscle, and reducing or repositioning fat in your eyelids for a more rested and youthful appearance. The procedure can also benefit patients with functional issues due to sagging skin obscuring their visual field and ability to see clearly.

What Happens During Upper Eyelid Surgery?

During upper eyelid surgery, your surgeon will create incisions in the natural creases of the upper eyelids. These incisions won’t be visible when your eyes are open.

They will then trim excess skin and fat. They may also reposition fat deposits and tighten muscles to create a smoother, rejuvenated, more defined eyelid contour.

These adjustments have a refreshing effect on your overall facial expression. Once done, they’ll close the incisions with fine sutures to reduce scarring.

Dr. Lauren Moy, board-certified facial cosmetic surgeon and member of the American Academy of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery shares her expertise:

“Eyelid surgery combined with other methods such as laser resurfacing and/or nanofat injections can help provide additional rejuvenation by addressing darkened undereyes. Nanofat has advantages over conventional, hyaluronic acid fillers in that complications are less and it is longer lasting. A consultation allows us to discuss your concerns, so we can create a customized treatment plan for you.”

What Can Upper Eyelid Surgery Do for You?

If you’re tired of being disappointed by what you see in the mirror, here are some of the reasons to consider upper eyelid surgery:

Turn Back the Hands of Time

By improving the appearance of sagging or droopy skin, upper eyelid surgery can help you look more alert and rested. Because of this, your eyes and entire face will look more youthful, even if you didn’t get a full night’s sleep.

Enhances Facial Symmetry

Uneven features such as sagging and asymmetrical eyelids can detract from your appearance. Upper eyelid surgery can correct uneven eyelids by removing and adjusting skin, fat, and muscle, leading to a more balanced and proportional look that enhances natural beauty.

Improves Eyesight

If you’re noticing that you’re struggling to see clearly, you can lift your upper eyelids by undergoing upper blepharoplasty. The procedure tightens the levator muscles to restore unobstructed vision, resulting in a more invigorated and energized appearance.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

You may be a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery if:

  • You’re in good health.
  • You want to reduce the appearance of drooping and wrinkles in your eyelids to refresh your appearance.
  • You have realistic expectations of what eyelid surgery can achieve.

Before undergoing eyelid surgery, you’ll have a thorough consultation with your surgeon at Moy-Fincher-Chipps. Your surgeon will evaluate various factors during the assessment, including skin quality, facial anatomy, and individual goals.

This comprehensive assessment lets them determine whether eyelid surgery is right for you.

What Is Recovery Like After Upper Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, done under local anesthesia in our surgery centers, with a relatively straightforward recovery. Initially, you may experience temporary tearing, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. Minimal swelling and/or bruising is common.

Your facial cosmetic surgeon will provide you with a list of instructions which will include using cold compresses with ice-soaked cotton pads for the first 48-72 hours while keeping your head elevated. Our surgeons use dissolving stitches, eliminating the need for painful suture removal.

Any discomfort can typically be managed with extra-strength Tylenol. Most patients return to normal activities within 7-10 days, though strenuous activities should be avoided for 3-4 weeks.

By two weeks, most bruising and swelling will have resolved completely. Sun protection and protective sunglasses are essential during recovery, and thanks to our combination of surgery with laser resurfacing, incision scars are usually invisible.
