A 63-year-old female presented to our Beverly Hills office interested in improving her sagging jowls, facial wrinkles and numerous sunspots. Although she is vigilant about using sunscreen now, she was less proactive in the past. After a dermatology cosmetic consultation, we recommended a combination of CO2 laser resurfacing and a facelift. Facelift surgery can be performed using a minimally invasive technique with local tumescent anesthesia for enhanced patient safety. Deeper tissues are lifted and secured to provide long-lasting lift, while excess skin is removed and redraped to create a more youthful contour. Jowls are lifted and the jawline becomes more defined. To match this restored contour, we often combine facial surgical procedures with laser resurfacing. When contour is improved alone, there is a recognizable mismatch between this more youthful profile and more aged skin. To most people, it makes a facelift look more obviously “done.” Because laser resurfacing evens skin tone, removes brown spots and softens lines and wrinkles very well around the eyes and mouth, the skin becomes much healthier and younger appearing. This younger skin much better matches the resulting younger contour achieved from a facelift. For patients hoping to achieve the greatest cosmetic improvement and who wish to continue appearing most natural, the combination of laser resurfacing and a facelift is often the best approach.
