Canthopexy Surgery in Beverly Hills
Our eyes, including the eyelids and eyebrows, are the most important aesthetic features of the face. Our eyes are one of the first things we notice about a person, and they transmit emotion and help us connect to each other. Youthful eyes project confidence and beauty.
With sun damage, smoking, wear and tear, heredity and age, the supporting tissues of the eyelids deteriorate. As we age, the corners of our eyes gradually shift downward and the eyes become rounder, creating a hollow look that lacks energy and enthusiasm. The good news is that a simple cosmetic surgical procedure call a canthopexy can restore a more youthful appearance, by eliminating the tired, sad or angry look of aged eyes.
Eye anatomy
The lateral canthal tendon, located under the skin at the outer corner of the eye, is the primary support structure for the lower eyelids. Additional support is provided by the orbital muscle that opens and closes the eye. As we age, the tendon and muscle stretch and sag. A canthopexy can reinforce the tendon and muscle.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
A lower eyelid blepharoplasty is a procedure to rejuvenate the lower eyelid, and involves the removal of excess skin and fat. A canthopexy is a complementary component of a lower lid blepharoplasty. The renowned facial plastic surgeons at Moy, Fincher and Chipps Facial Plastics & Dermatology in Beverly Hills understand that while a canthopexy is a small detail, it is fundamental to restoring a youthful appearance. Canthopexy is a major revitalizing part of lower eyelid surgery, and often enhances the results of a blepharoplasty.
What is a Canthopexy?
A canthopexy is a minor surgical procedure that strengthens and stabilizes the lateral canthal tendon and surrounding internal structures of the lower eyelid. This surgical procedure repositions the outside corner of the eye where the lids meet, restoring a youthful, uplifted eye. The procedure is performed with invisible sutures to tighten a drooping lower eyelid.
A canthopexy may be recommended when the lower lid has deteriorated, and when lower eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is planned, to prevent a loose lower lid, or to repair previous lower lid after a lower lid blepharoplasty when the eyelid begins to loosen over time.
A canthopexy is a rejuvenation procedure that tightens the lower eyelid, without cutting or detaching the tendon and muscles. It improves muscle tone, and restores the supporting structures. This helps elevate sunken eyelid tissues, and improves the shape of the eye.
Who is a good candidate?
- Individuals who are generally healthy and have no medical problems that can impair healing, including smoking.
- Lower eyelids that droop or sag due to age, sun damage, prior eyelid surgery or paralysis.
Blepharoplasty is among the top five most popular cosmetic procedures and for good reason. It yields immediate, noticeable results that dramatically improve your appearance and self-confidence. Canthopexy concurrent with lower lid blepharoplasty will improve lower lid tone, and restore and maintain a natural appearance.
